Youth Connection Charter School is a hybrid school that combines direct classroom instruction (think traditional school) with an online curriculum and enrolls students who have dropped out of other high schools. This unique learning environment allows teachers to tailor individual lessons to meet each students’ needs. Here is a short film detailing YCCS Virtual’s unique and successful approach:
YCCS Virtual High School has found success by providing teachers in classrooms while empowering motivated students with the tools to learn customized curriculum at their own pace. Last year, YCCS Virtual graduated 60 students in its inaugural class. This year, YCCS Virtual will graduate 120 students, most of whom plan to pursue higher education. All of these students are previous high school dropouts.
Chicago’s poorest students can compete, if only they are given the chance. 50% of students in Chicago do not graduate from High School, but YCCS is demonstrating that these students can be successful if we provide them with our best tools in support of their education. This public charter school on Chicago’s west side can serve as a model for the rest of the Chicago Public School system, demonstrating how schools can successfully incorporate digital learning technologies in to the classroom to improve our broken education system.
