Each quarter the Illinois Policy Institute produces Compass, a quarterly publication filled with original writing on topics that will help make Illinois first in economic outlook and job creation. Compass also promotes personal freedom and prosperity in Illinois and America.
This issue of Compass focuses on the power of school choice.
Many families in Illinois feel trapped when they are forced to send their kids to failing schools. Under the current public school system, these families are limited in their choices and many have no power to leave. Fortunately, a redesign of educational systems is happening in some states and cities, such as Indiana and Milwaukee. But not in Illinois. A voucher program could make a difference for thousands of kids and families in our state. Illinois doesn’t have such a voucher program – yet. So as you read this edition of Compass, keep in mind those families and kids with no power to exit.
Here are some of the other highlights from this issue:
The power of choice: school choice changes lives
This story outlines school choice legislation in neighboring Indiana and Wisconsin, and follows the journey of an Indiana family whose children have access to private schools through their state’s voucher program.
Betting on Illinois: Pizza with a purpose
Chicago entrepreneur and restaurateur Dimitri Syrkin-Nikolau is expanding his presence in the Windy City by investing in people and his community.

From the CEO – John Tillman
The fight for school choice lives on. In this article, the Illinois Policy Institute’s CEO reflects on a 2010 Illinois voucher bill and the need to continue pushing for educational choice.
Fighting the progressive tax
Kristina Rasmussen, Executive Vice President of the Illinois Policy Institute, exposes the next major tax grab in Illinois – a progressive tax. Is one of your representatives trying to increase taxes on 85 percent of Illinoisans?
