Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates paid off $1,533 in back property taxes and penalties on her Indiana house after authorities revoked a credit reserved for owner occupants.
Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates paid off her back taxes and penalties on her Indiana home, amounting to $1,533.
The St. Joseph County assessor’s office confirmed Davis Gates paid off the back taxes and penalties on her Indiana house Feb. 5. The deadline for the taxes and fines was Dec. 8, 2023.
David Gates erroneously claimed a homestead exemption on the property while living in Chicago, effectively shorting revenue for Indiana schools. It’s an exemption which is reserved for those living in a house they own.
An Illinois Policy Institute Freedom of Information Act request also found Davis Gates paid off a separate $5,381 debt April 15 to Chicago for nearly four years of past-due trash, sewer and water bills. The payment came after repeated requests by the city to delay responding to the April 3 FOIA request, stating “there is a need for consultation” with other city entities.
Davis Gates has decried the “wealthy” for not paying their “fair share” while making over $289,000 from her union positions.
Davis Gates leads CTU negotiations on new contract demands with Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, whom the CTU selected from its staff and funded to run for office. The current contract is set to expire on June 30. Demands fill 142 pages.
City taxpayers should wonder: Davis Gates’ personal financial disarray added to her attitude the new contract could cost “$50 billion and three cents” likely equal a lot of pain in their wallets.
