Judy Baar Topinka was larger than life.

Judy Baar Topinka was larger than life. That is one reason everyone is so surprised and saddened by her unexpected passing early this morning. What made her unique was that she never gave into the tradition of risk-averse politicians who are coached to soften the edges, mute the flamboyance, tone down the commentary and, generally, turn into platitudinous sounding candidates that offend no one.

That was not her. She was bold, loud and funny. Further, as any student of politics knows, loyalty is hard to earn and keep – she did both.

What I always admired and respected was her authenticity, an all too precious commodity in a political world shaped by polling, focus groups and shape-shifting politicians who lack constancy.

She has been an authentic constant in Illinois politics for decades. She will be missed. Rest in peace.
