Illinois is home to the most units of government in the country — from forest preserves to mosquito-abatement districts — and has one of the nation’s highest property tax rates to fund them all. And for too long, local governments have been able to squeeze taxpayers without their consent.
A property-tax freeze means that if local voters want to increase taxes, they can, and if they’ve had enough, they can tap out. This gives local taxing power back to those who know best — local taxpayers.
