Oppose automatic annual gas tax hikes

State lawmakers voted to double the state’s gas tax from 19 cents to 38 cents per gallon, an increase that would bring Illinoisans the second-highest total gas tax burden in the nation.

But the bill heading to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s desk is even worse than that: Senate Bill 1939 would allow the state’s gas tax to rise gradually every year, based on the rate of inflation.

According to current inflation forecasts, that means Illinois’ gas tax would reach 43.5 cents per gallon by 2025. That doesn’t include the layers of sales taxes, local gas taxes and other fees Illinoisans pay at the pump.

Illinoisans already pay among the highest gas taxes in the nation. Sign the petition to tell your lawmakers Illinois cannot afford annual gas tax hikes.
