It was a Democratic sweep in the voting for statewide offices Tuesday.
For the first time in nearly a quarter century, Illinois will have a new secretary of state. Jesse White, who has held office since the 1990s, chose not to run for reelection. Democrat Alexi Giannoulias defeated Republican Dan Brady and Libertarian Jon Stewart.

According to unofficial vote totals from Tuesday’s election, more than half of Barrington voters responded “yes” to a ballot referendum asking if the northwest suburb should move to home rule status, paving the way for what leaders there said is the ability for the town to better serve residents.
“We are excited about the possibilities that it provides for our residents, and we are confident that by being a home rule community, the village can better meet the needs of our constituents going forward,” Village President Karen Darch told Pioneer Press in an election night statement.

Democrats held on to their majority on the Illinois Supreme Court Tuesday night as Judge Elizabeth Rochford declared victory in one of two vacant seats up for grabs.
Rochford thanked her supporters about 10:30 p.m. after her Republican opponent, Mark Curran, called to concede in the newly drawn suburban 2nd District.
